Modifications for Special Needs Students
The Great Depression

A. A Hmong child who is on the 2nd grade level for both reading and vocabulary is in your 5th grade social studies class. He is an extremely bright child.  How do your plan to incorporate this child into your classes literature unit?

                            - This child would be in the lowest reading group in the class
                            - use symbols instead of the written language because Hmongs do not have a written language
                            - conduct pre reading
                            - test the student for reading level to be sure of his placement
                            - use pre taped reading for him
                            - use echo reading
                            - do picture sorts with this child
                            - have child work with a reading teacher or ESL teacher to read books before coming to class with groups
                            - have the word wizard person draw or cut pictures out to go with words
                            - have this child keep a vocabulary notebook of words and pictures

B. You have a child in your 5th grade class who has been labeled ADHD.  This child has found to be above grade level intelligence.  He complains all the time about being in class, after 10 minutes of instruction he no longer pays attention. He will get up out of his seat and walk around during your instruction.  What will you do if he forgets to take his Ritalin? How will you incorporate this child into your classroom?

                            - Ignore him unless he gets violent while he is out of his seat
                            - have entire class stretch and have movement activities
                            - let him pick a buddy who will watch out for him
                            - have to entire class always stand up if they have and kind of question instead of raising their hands
-make sure he knows the daily schedule, tell him everyday of any changes
                            - put this child in the highest reading group possible to keep him on task
                            - read all test aloud with him
                            - give the instructions to the whole class then go to him and ask him what he is supposed to do

C. A Latino/Latina child who, because of family moving constantly has just moved into your 5th grade social studies classroom.  They have a bright mind yet their vocabulary and reading ability is on the 3rd grade ability level.  How will you incorporate and assist this child to function a long with the rest of the class?  What will you do to adapt to this child's needs?

                            - test this student for reading level
                            - use some symbols but more written language
                            - do pre reading
                            - read aloud
                            - use pre taped reading
                            - do echo reading
                            - have child work with reading teacher or ESL teacher to read book before coming to class with group
                            - have word wizard person draw or cut picture out to go with words
                            - have him keep a vocabulary notebook of word and pictures
                            - put this child in the lowest reading group but keep testing for improvement and move up as necessary
